Jeanne Gonzalès, who often modelled for her sister, Eva, is seated on a donkey, while Henri Guérard, the artist's husband, looks on. After the artist's sudden death aged only 34, Jeanne and Henri married. The unfinished painting was found in the artist's studio after her death and the area around the man's jacket is unresolved. It clearly shows the influence of Édouard Manet, who became the artist's teacher after she worked as a model for him. Manet's portrait of Eva Gonzalès hangs in the National Gallery, London. This is the only work by Gonzalès in a public collection in Great Britain.
