In 1922 Nevinson had a caravan converted to a mobile studio to allow him to paint on site in all weathers. He travelled all over the South of England from Cornwall to the Sussex Downs. He recorded the details of the landscape with jewel-like clarity with each tree and bush separate and distinct. The Downland areas of Britain, created by the farmers of the Bronze Age and Iron Age represented the cradle of British identity and history. They were popular subjects with artists between the wars. Nevinson was one of the most radical and inventive artists of his generation. He was deeply influenced by the ideas of Futurism and Vorticism, which celebrated the dynamism of the new Machine Age. During the First World War he served in the Ambulance Corps.
