Ruth Tomlinson was a Canadian artist who exhibited widely in both Canada and England. Inspired by the French Impressionists, she had a keen interest in life and nature. As well as folk themes she also used the concert hall and the theatre in search of subjects which attracted her. 'Folk subjects give me a thrill but unlike the photographer I become involved with the subjects painted, who in most cases are unaware of an artist as a person somewhat in the nature of a one-sided love affair. My strongest work is naturally a result of sympathetic co-operation.'
