The English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) is the national folk arts development organisation for England. Cecil Sharp House, the purpose-built home of the EFDSS, is an impressive 1930s listed building housing three halls and the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library. The main hall, Kennedy Hall, houses a 20ft by 69ft mural by the artist Ivon Hitchens, which at the time of its unveiling in 1954 was the largest mural in the country. The library, named in honour of the composer, song collector and former President of the EFDSS, Ralph Vaughan Williams, is England’s national folk music and dance archive, a one-stop shop for anybody interested in the folk arts – 'the most important concentration of material on traditional song, dance and music in the country' ('A Dictionary of English Folklore'). The collection includes works by both notable painters such as William Nicholson, David Owen and Anthony Morris, and amateur folk artists depicting English folk traditions and dance.
