Poet and novelist; her eight volumes of verse, many illustrated with her own comic drawings, include 'Not Waving but Drowning' (1957). Smith is also the author of three novels of which the first, 'Novel on Yellow Paper' (1936) is the best known. In the 1960s Smith built a popular reputation as a performer of her own work, making a number of broadcasts and recordings.
