This painting shows London's bomb-damaged skyline with St Paul's Cathedral in the horizon. Richmond painted it as a student from the roof of the Borough Polytechnic, now London South Bank University (LSBU). In 1946 Richmond moved to London to study art at the Polytechnic under David Bomberg. Students from traditional art schools in the Capital flocked to Bomberg's unorthodox evening classes. These students, including Richmond, Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff, would climb onto the Institute's roof to paint London. Richmond was David Bomberg's most loyal student and a founder member of the Borough Group (1946–1951). Throughout his 60-year-long career, he never swayed from practising and teaching Bomberg's particular vision of painting. Richmond gave the painting to LSBU in 1992 to mark its Centenary.
