Baptised on 23rd April 1604, Sir Simon Fanshawe was the fourth son of Sir Henry Fanshawe (1569–1619) and his wife Elizabeth Smythe (1572–1631) . He was knighted on 11th February 1640 and was taken prisoner in the Civil War, but was later fined and allowed to go to France. He is said to have borne a striking resemblance to Oliver Cromwell, with whom he shared a great-great-grandfather.
