Sir Arnold Bax (1883–1953) is shown seated in a green chair with his pipe, reading a book. Half-length, turned to the left and looking down at the page, he wears a suit and a coloured, patterned tie. The portrait was painted by the poet and painter Vera Bax who was at the time married to his brother, the poet Clifford Bax. Sir Arnold was a former student of the Royal Academy of Music, and Master of the King's, and then the Queen's Music, from 1942–1953.
