Military commander and governor of India. Clive, who had earned his reputation as an officer in India, was placed in charge of Fort St David, the day before the disastrous 'Black Hole' of Calcutta incident in 1756. He defeated the Nawab of Bengal at the Battle of Plassey (1757) and by 1760 he had overcome the French and Dutch threat to the East India Company. As Governor of Bengal (1765–1766), he curbed corruption and private profit among the company's employees.
