This is a head and shoulders portrait of Alderman Richard Thompson, a Governor of the Company of Merchant Adventurers’ from 1715–1718 and Lord Mayor of York in the years 1708 and 1721. After being painted it was first hung in Knavesmire House in the City before being moved to the Merchant Adventurers' Hall. In a humorous article a writer wrote a short poem on its travels: 'In Knavesmire House he smiles (as a scorn), Hung pendant half a century 'gainst the wall, Till freed from durance he from thence was borne, To join his brethren in this ancient Hall.'

He is shown dressed in his Aldermanic robes. Between his fur trimming and cravat, the Lord Mayor of York’s chain of office is visible. The inscription was added in 1820 by a Mr Horsley.
