A portrait of a young girl, nearly full face, in white dress trimmed with lace and blue ribbon, a posy of blue and pink flowers in her blonde hair.

An Irish-born Luke Sullivan came to England at an early age. His father was employed in the stables of the duke of Beaufort, who noticed the boy's talent for drawing and arranged an art education for him in London. Sullivan trained with an printmaker and later worked in the studios of Hogarth and the French engraver Jacques Phillippe Le Bas. He took up miniature painting around 1750. The elegant French rococo style of his miniatures reflects the influence of Le Bas. The delicate colouration and soft-focus outlines of this portrait of an unknown child are typical of Sullivan’s work.
