This is a later version of a known 1860 bust of Pius IX by Giovanni Maria Benzoni (1809–1873), who had a large and busy studio in Rome with many assistants, which produced many copies of his works and most probably continued doing so after his death (when the business was very likely taken over by one of his sons, presumably the G. B. Benzoni of the inscription).
