Philip Metcalfe made his money as a brewer and distiller, and was active as a philanthropist and collector. He was a member of the Society of Dilettanti, a club for art connoisseurs, and a friend of Samuel Johnson, Sir Joshua Reynolds and many other prominent artistic and literary figures.
This portrait was painted by the Italian Pompeo Batoni, who specialised in portraits of British sitters on the Grand Tour in Italy. Metcalfe wears a stylish red coat and waistcoat, and holds his hat under his arm; in the background is a view of the Colosseum in Rome.
