This 1912 portrait is of the artist's first son, Gwyn. It was previously thought that the robes had belonged to David Lloyd-George whilst he was the Chancellor of the Exchequer. This is now known not to be so. The robes belonged to Sir Samuel Evans who was born in Skewen, South Wales, not far from Maesteg, the artist`s home town. Gwyn became a prominent astronomer. He sadly died suffering from peritonitis whilst working in South Africa. It can’t be seen from the photograph of the painting, but near the top left, over painted, but still visible is the word ‘Gwyn’. Nobody will know if this was the work of Gwyn – but it probably was.
