The mural is set on the side of the 'Berstrete Gates' pub towards the original site of the Ber Street Gates. It shows the gate with portcullis flanked by one tower. This was the state of the gate in 1720 when drawn by J. Kirkpatrick. His drawings were reproduced in the engravings by Henry Ninham published in 1864. Moray-Smith followed the engraving closely adding some vegetation, the people and flags.
