This is an example of shini-e, a single sheet woodblock memorial print produced sometime before 1843.

It commemorates a famous Kabuki actor by the name of Ichikawa Ebijuro I, who is depicted here as a samurai character. However, the print also informs the reader that the actor Ichikawa died in Osaka on the 16th day of the 7th lunar month (July) in 1827, and who was buried at the Mitsu-dera temple, Shimounchi. Ichikawa was a talented actor who achieved fame in Edo and Kamigata, he also excelled in large scale tachimawari (fight scenes) and hayagawari (quick costume changes) techniques.

The print was created and published by Osaka-based artist Utagawa Kunihiro (1816–1860); his factory name was 'Tenmaya kihei'.
