London-born Quinn graduated from Cambridge University in 1985 before returning to establish his career. Although known as a sculptor, he has also produced prints and photographs. His use of non-traditional materials, from blood to silicone to human excrement, speaks of his interest in the beauty and messy reality of the body. Quinn came to prominence in 1991 with his self portrait, 'Self'; his head cast with eight pints of his own frozen blood. In 1999 he began a series of subjects with missing limbs, which in 2005 came to public attention when his sculpture, 'Alison Lapper Pregnant', was placed on Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth. His 'DNA Portrait of Sir John Sulston' was commissioned for the Gallery in 2001.
