A male miner, sculpted in, now weathered, metal, appears to step out of the stone wall bearing a beaker of water, his faithful whippet close to his feet. Movement is the key feature in this statue, suggestive of the passing of time and of the fluctuating traditions and histories in the ex-mining community. It is something that seems particularly pertinent now with plans as of 2019 to re-open the mine in Whitehaven that will make it the first new deep coal mine in the UK for decades.
