A full-length sculpture of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, created by Don Potter for the opening of Baden-Powell House, 1961. On 23rd April 1942, a Baden-Powell Memorial fund was launched to raise funds to build a Scout house with accommodation in the Founders memory, where all Scouts would be welcome. By 22nd February 1943, £76,000 had been raised. More funds were raised by Cubs and Scouts during the Second World War, for example by collecting scrap paper which could be sold. In 1956, a Second World War bomb site on the corner of Queen’s Gate and Cromwell Road was bought for the building. In 1957, to mark the 100th anniversary of Baden-Powell’s birth, a public memorial appeal was launched by the Lord Mayor of London. The foundation stone was laid in 1959 by Olave Baden-Powell, Chief Guide and widow of the Founder.
