The artist, William Timym, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. He was acclaimed as one of the leading pre-war political cartoonists. After years of producing children's graphics, which he always signed ‘TIM’, in the 1970s Timym started to produce animal sculptures and paintings, which he signed 'William Timym'. He was commissioned to produce sculptures for Sir John Aspinall's zoos in England and of Phil the Gorilla for Florida Zoo. In 1977 Timym executed this life-size bronze of a lion's head for the Zoological Society of London, which is mounted on the Lion Terraces.
