Leff Pouishnoff was a Ukrainian-born pianist and composer, who immigrated to the UK, via Paris, in 1920, and made his home in England. He was especially associated with performances of the works of Chopin and Liszt. During the Second World War, he gave concerts to factory workers, miners and dockers, and made extensive tours among the forces in the Middle East. He committed suicide in 1959.

Marks made several portraits of Pouishnoff in the 1930s using a variety of media and techniques including charcoal, ceramics and lithography.
