Painter, ceramist and teacher, born in Cologne, Germany, as Margarete Heymann. Marks early determined to be an artist. She was trained at the Kunstgewerberschule Koln and Kunstakademie Düsseldorf as well as the Weimar Bauhaus, 1920. After a period teaching, in 1923 with her husband Gustav Loebenstein she set up a ceramic factory which was forcibly sold when the Nazis came to power in 1933. Hael Werkstätten für Kunstlerische Keramik (Hael for Heymann/Loebenstein) soon became a leader in its field, with her flair for design and his business ability. In 1935 Marks emigrated to England, remarrying in 1938. After more teaching she established a factory in Stoke-on-Trent, moving her operations to London just after World War II. In the period leading to the war she had turned more to painting and in the early 1950s started to work in oil, showing in summer exhibitions at the Redfern Gallery.
