The circular column or 'Lantern' is cast in panels of an optically clear resin with a carved interior relief surface and a smooth exterior surface and is atop polished stone plinth in turn standing on a circular symmetrical pattern mosaic. The imagery upon the resin panels that make up the 'strata' in the 'Lantern' represents six different layers of the earths make-up; geo-sphere, palaeontology, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere and ending with technology. The illuminated piece is inspired by a miner's lantern and the part coal has played in the history of Blackwood.
