An avid collector of books and paintings, Lumley's library was bought after his death by James I for Henry, Prince of Wales. His magnificent collection of paintings included Holbein's cartoon for the Whitehall mural. Lumley was involved in the Ridolfi plot for the re-establishment of Roman Catholicism in England, and was imprisoned from 1569 to 1573.
The portrait is attributed to the highly talented Netherlandish artist Steven van der Meulen who worked in England from around 1561 until his death. He is referred to by Lumley as the 'famous paynter Steven'.
