An English ecclesiastical architect, most famous for the design of Westminster Cathedral. He established an architectural practice in London in 1862. In 1868 he designed the seminary of St Thomas at Hammersmith (built 1876–1888, now known as the Convent of the Sacred Heart), considered one of his best works. Bentley built several other churches before, in 1894, being commissioned by Cardinal Vaughan to design the Roman Catholic cathedral of Westminster. He persuaded the cardinal that the design should be Byzantine. Having travelled to Italy to study churches there, his plans were drawn up in 1895. The first ceremony held at the cathedral was Cardinal Vaughan's requiem, in 1903, and it was consecrated in 1910.
