Johann Sebastian Bach is undoubtedly one of the towering figures in the history of music. Famed in his lifetime as a virtuoso keyboard player, his compositional output marks the highest stage of development of most of the baroque compositional forms. This marble bust presents a traditional image of Bach, described by the artist as 'my own interpretation from a study of the old, authentic engravings, and of the works of the great master'. It was donated by Mr E. F. Searles of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, an American millionaire and accomplished amateur organist. Thomas Ball was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He was apprenticed to an engraver in Boston and initially worked as a portrait painter and miniaturist before studying sculpture in Italy.
