Isabella Waerbeke was the wife of the animal painter Paul de Vos; the couple were prominent members of the artistic community in Antwerp. Van Dyck painted the Portrait of Isabella Waerbeke c.1628, possibly to celebrate the birth of her eldest son. Originally, it had as its companion a portrait of the sitter’s husband. The pictures hung together in a ground-floor room of De Vos’s house on the Corte Gasthuis Straet in Antwerp and were left to his son, Peter Paul de Vos, in 1675.
