Carriera was enormously successful and is credited with establishing pastel as a worthy medium for finished portraiture, rather than informal sketches. Her subtle, sensitive portraits became particularly popular with Grand Tourists from Britain, France and Germany who visited Venice. Artists such as Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, who is also represented in the Barber’s Collection, and Angelica Kauffman, were notably influenced by Carriera.
