A painter who won premiums at Westminster Palace Competitions in 1842 and 1847. He visited Italy from 1843 to 1847. His large allegorical works on universal themes appealed deeply to the Victorians, and he was considered to be the greatest English artist of his age. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1867, married the actress Ellen Terry in 1864 and separated in 1865, and secondly the artist and ceramicist Mary Fraser Tytler in 1886.
