This seaside scene with people on the beach was painted in 1971 from the sea steps leading to the shore of the artist’s aunt’s cottage.

Frances Walker, RSA, was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, and is a painter and printmaker. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art and taught at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen.

‘My work,’ Walker says, ‘has a lot to do with people and their environment, also about me in my environment. In all my work there is a frequent evidence – often ancient and long lasting – of man’s changing influence on the environment by occupation of the landscape.’

The artist divides her time between her home on Tiree and Aberdeen where she continues to draw, paint and make prints daily as has long been her practice.
