The village of Wytham was partly given to and partly purchased by the University of Oxford from Raymond Ffennell in 1943. It includes the entire village including all the houses shown here by Toynbee.

Lawrence Toynbee was educated at Ampleforth, New College and the Ruskin School of Drawing. Primarily a portrait painter, he also painted sportsmen in action.
