Howard Roberts studied at Cardiff College of Art (1938–1941) and thereafter served in the army until 1945. After the war, he worked for the Army Education Corps in Florence and subsequently studied and taught in the city for a time. He returned to art college in Cardiff 1946–1947 and then taught at Tiverton Art School in Devon 1947–1955. Roberts and his wife opened a successful commercial gallery in 1957 which held many important and innovative exhibitions, ranging from Welsh themes through to group shows. Roberts' views in this series of paintings were the result of a visit to Venice in the autumn of 1968. (He also stayed in the city the previous year and held an exhibition of his Venetian paintings in his gallery in May 1967.) Painted in pinks, lilacs, ochres and white, the scenes are lush both in technique and atmosphere and are arresting images of the city.
