Belfast-born Joseph McWilliams was educated in the Belfast College of Art and the Open University and was involved in art education for many years. He is well known for his vibrant and energetic depictions of community and political life in Belfast. He was the President of the Royal Ulster Academy from 2000 to 2004.

This painting was commissioned by Observer Newspaper to celebrate the inaugural fireworks for Belfast Festival at Queen's,1995.
