This is from a series of work by Helen Chadwick called 'Ego Geometria Sum', a set of self portraits which represent different points in her life. The Latin title means 'I am geometry' and comes from Chadwick's interest in finding mathematical order in one's life.

Each self portrait is based on an object which symbolises her at a certain age, in this case a piano representing her at the age of nine. It is covered with images of Chadwick, the area she grew up in, and pictures of the piano itself. She is careful to hide her face as the work is intended to be a universal portrait of growing up.
