Helen Chadwick was known for challenging stereotypical perceptions of the body in elegant yet unconventional forms. In 'Ego Geometria Sum IX: High School', she used her own body to express her subjectivity in a physical and philosophical sense, appearing partially naked in the photographs on each surface of the sculpture. The volume of cube corresponds exactly to the artist’s size at thirteen years old, in order that she ‘could be contained within (it)’. The piece is a work from a larger project entitled 'Ego Geometria Sum'. Initially titled 'Growing Pains', the project charts the artist’s development from birth to the age of thirty through a collection of sculpture forms, referring to an object associated with a formative moment or event in Chadwick’s life.
