The 1970s saw the rise of nationalist sentiments in some of the population and the rapid rise of the National Front, a political party which called for a ban on non-white immigration and for enforced repatriation. 'Destruction of the National Front' is a response to the appropriation of the British flag by a racist ideology. Chambers tore up and reconfigured an image of the Union Jack as a swastika, indicating the widespread association of the NF with the Nazis. The collage, consisting of scattered fragments, is no longer recognisable as either an image of the flag or the swastika.
