The strong lines and deep, intense colour in Perlman’s painting reflect her love affair with the vibrant landscape of the West Indies. Perlman painted Curaçao and its people extensively after settling there in 1940, when she and her husband fled the Netherlands during the Second World War. Suzanne Perlman was born in 1923 in Budapest, where her father was well known in Hungarian art circles as a collector and expert. After moving to Curaçao she went to study at the University of Guanajuato, Mexico and at the School of Art in Colombia University, New York. She was invited by Kokoschka to work with him and his influence has remained central to her work. After the death of her husband she moved to London to be closer to her family and continue her work.
