George William Joy was commissioned to produce this portrait of Constance Louisa Maynard. Constance Maynard was the first Mistress of Westfield College from 1882 to 1913. She was instrumental in the establishment of the institution, one of the first higher education institutions for women in England, and was also a prolific writer and theologian.
