Shrewsbury-born naturalist Charles Darwin established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestry. He proposed the scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection.

Darwin served as a naturalist on the HMS 'Beagle' during a five-year voyage in the South Pacific in which he obtained evidence for the evolution of species.

Charles Darwin's father, Dr Robert Darwin (1766–1848), was born in Lichfield, Staffordshire and was married to Susannah Wedgwood, daughter of the Stoke-on-Trent pottery manufacturer Josiah Wedgwood.

This painting was commissioned by the Faculty of Sciences in 1999 to enhance Staffordshire University's Mellor Building.
