Born in Silverdale, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, John Cadman was a mining engineer and petroleum technologist. He was raised to the peerage in 1937, taking the title Baron Cadman of Silverdale.

The Cadman building at Staffordshire University is named after him. This painting was commissioned by the Faculty of Sciences in 1999 to enhance Staffordshire University's Mellor Building.
