In the foreground, a man with a black hat and a red scarf is carrying a cage on his shoulder. The cage contains three blue birds with black wings. Two more cages are included on the left of the composition: a red one with two yellow and black birds, and a green one containing a black bird. The right-hand side of the painting includes a banner with the writing ‘BUY A FINE SINGING BIRD’, and a dog with a red collar. Three white, blue, and red flowers are in the background, together with two orange-tinted trees. The work is mainly two-dimensional: some depth is conveyed on the face and clothes of the man. The bottom and top of the painting are also shaded to suggest depth. The composition is framed by a painted orange square. This panel is part of a set of seven commissioned by Alfred Ospalak for ‘The Cries of London’ series.
