Born Jakub Baurenfreund in Czechoslovakia in 1904, the artist studied and exhibited in Prague during the 1930s, painting a mural (later destroyed) for a private house in 1936. Much of his work was lost after he immigrated to England in 1939, anglicising his name soon after arrival.
During the Second World War, Bornfriend worked as a diamond cutter and taught Czech art students. He exhibited at Jack Bilbo’s Modern Art Gallery, London and held his first solo exhibition at Roland, Browse and Delbanco in 1950. In 1957, he was commissioned to create a large mural for the Jews’ College, London, based on a portfolio of studies of Jewish festivals, later printed as lithographs (of which Ben Uri holds a copy).
