A mounted watercolour view of Blake Street and the Assembly Rooms. To the left are 18th century houses, whilst on the right is an earlier seventeenth century building with its once open arcade filled in. A board affixed below the Blake Street sign shows this to have been one of York’s best known 18th century hotels, ‘ETRIDGES ROYAL HOTEL’. The hotel would be demolished in the late nineteenth century and replaced with a Victorian office block. Further towards St Helen’s Square comes the remodelled front of the Assembly Rooms, and railings all the way from here to the square. The scene is full of figures as well as a stagecoach which are all out of proportion in comparison to their surroundings.
