IN A PLAYING / CAREER SPANNING 21 YEARS WITH 541 APPEARANCES / FOR THE WOLVES, HE FIRST CAPTAINED THE TEAM IN THE / 1947/48 SEASON AND LED THEM TO AN F. A. CUP FINAL / VICTORY IN 1949 AND THREE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES / 1953/54, 1957/58 AND 1958/59. / FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR IN 1952, HE BECAME THE FIRST / PLAYER EVER TO MAKE 100 APPEARANCES FOR HIS COUNTRY. / IN TOTAL HE GAINED 105 INTERNATIONAL CAPS FOR ENGLAND / AND CAPTAINED HIS COUNTRY ON A RECORD 90 OCCASIONS, / INCLUDING THE FINAL STAGES OF THREE / WORLD CUP CAMPAIGNS. / IN RECOGNITION OF HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICES TO FOOTBALL / HE WAS MADE A COMMANDER OF THE ORDER OF THE BRITISH / EMPIRE IN 1959.
