Ben Nicholson was the leading abstract artist of his generation. Son of the painters William Nicholson and Mabel Pryde, attended the Slade School (1910–1911). In the 1920s, at Bankshead in Cumberland, he painted a 'primitive' style of landscape. He joined the '7 and 5' Society in 1924 and became its Chairman in 1926, taking it to the extremes of abstraction by 1935. His Constructivist-inspired paintings and reliefs and his large abstract sculptures were among the first British works of the modern movement to achieve international recognition. He was married to Barbara Hepworth from 1938 to 1951.
