Alfred Wolmark immigrated to England with his family as a child and was educated at the Royal Academy Schools, London. He is best known for his important early works of the Jewish orthodox community in London's East End. After 1911 Wolmark abandoned Jewish subject matter becoming a leading British Colourist. A longstanding supporter of Ben Uri, he was Vice President of the Society from 1923–1956. This portrait in middle age captures his distinctive features and familiar round spectacles, the wide-brimmed hat adding a dash of bravura. Wolmark also completed a reciprocal oil of Borough Johnson (current whereabouts unknown). Both painters were members of the 'Faculty', an independent organisation encompassing painting, commercial art, photography, architecture, printmaking, sculpture, design, drama, literature, music, crafts and even dancing.
