A carved life-size figure of a First World War soldier in uniform with his head down, hands resting on the top of a rifle, resting on the ground. It is sited on a new housing estate at the old Bickershaw Colliery. The road around the green has also been named Wilkinson Park Drive, indicated by three gold-coloured road signs, which have a representation of the Victoria Cross on them, and the coat of arms of Wigan Borough Council. Alfred Robert Wilkinson, VC, born in Leigh, was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
