Details in the painting provide evidence that this is not a mature work. The ship closest the pier appears to be too large whilst the figures on the pier are also out of proportion. It appears that the artist is more concerned with the creation of an atmospheric effect rather than accurately displaying shipping details.
At the age of 15, the artist was sent to study under Simon de Vileger in Weesp. This painting was most likely produced after returning to his father in Amsterdam.
