Painter and teacher, born in St Raphael, France, son of the artist Anne Redpath and architect and artist James Michie. Studied at Edinburgh College of Art, 1946–53, under William Gillies, in 1953–4 visiting Italy with a travelling scholarship. Michie (pronounced Miki) lectured in painting at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, 1957–61; he then joined the staff of Edinburgh College of Art, being appointed head of drawing and painting, 1982–90, and to a personal chair at Heriot-Watt University in 1990. In 1979 he was visiting professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Art, Belgrade. He was a member of Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, a president of SSA and was elected RSA in 1972. Was a regular exhibitor in one-man shows at Mercury Gallery, later ones including The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh, 2003.
