Painter, born in Yorkshire who settled in Edinburgh and who studied at the College of Art there, 1979–83. In the latter year he won an Andrew Grant Scholarship and made his first trip to Turkey; he later won a Turkish Government Scholarship, which cemented his ongoing relationship with the country. He won other grants, scholarships and bursaries which enabled him to travel widely in Europe. Maclaurin began to show in 1983, having a first solo exhibition in 1984 at Edinburgh University Staff Club. Other solo shows included Mercury Gallery, Edinburgh, 1987; St Catherine’s College, Cambridge, 1988; and 369 Gallery, Edinburgh, Turberville Smith, London, 1989; and Berkeley Square Gallery, 2003. In 1998, Maclaurin gained the Noble Grossart Prize, his winning painting inspired by a long cycle ride across Australia, where he spent 18 months on a Robert Menzies Fellowship.
